“The changes to farm inheritance tax announced in the budget will devastate British farming. The very smallest farms may be unaffected but any farm large enough to provide a full time living to a family will be severely impacted. Even a modestly sized 400 acre farm supporting a couple of family members and making at best £40k a year will face a bill of £400k to £500k once it is passed down. There is no way to pay this without breaking up the business. Why would anyone carry on growing food or planting hedges or making any investment in a business that could be destroyed the moment a family member dies? In a bid to hit the wealthy, this government will destroy the future of British food production. This policy must be reversed before farming is damaged forever.”
